Moving over for Emergency Vehicles

Springfield, CO, September 20, 2017– When an emergency vehicle is coming up behind, or passing in the other direction, state law directs that drivers are to move over to the shoulder of the road and wait for the emergency vehicle to safely pass.  Colorado Revised statute - 42-4-705 states “the driver of every other vehicle shall yield the right-of-way as close as possible to, the right-hand edge or curb of a roadway clear of any intersection and shall stop and remain in that position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, except when otherwise directed by a police officer.”

There have been a number of incidents recently in Springfield in which drivers have pulled into the middle turn lane of Main Street and stopped as emergency vehicles have been attempting to pass when responding to calls. This action puts the driver of the vehicle as well as the emergency responders and other drivers at risk.

Please remember to properly allow emergency vehicles to pass to keep everyone safe.
