We have been notified that BNSF Railroad plans to make repairs to the railway crossing on HWY 287/385 starting Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Our Street Dept. has been working as quickly as possible, with the department heads for our local CDOT, Police Department, Fire Department, Sheriff’s Office and County Commissioners, to effectively plan alternate routes that provide the least amount of disruption to our town’s daily life.
Northbound traffic on Hwy 287/385 will be directed to turn left (west) onto 15th Ave., right (north) onto Colorado St., right (east) on 13th Ave, and finally left (north) back onto HWY 287/385.
Southbound traffic on Hwy 287/385 will be directed to turn right (west) onto 12th Ave., left (south) onto Colorado St., left (east) on 16th Ave., and finally right (south) back onto HWY 287/385.
*Please see the attached picture for clarification of these directions.
Town of Springfield residents, we know you are reading this thinking “Gosh, that is going to be a lot of traffic on our local streets.” You are not wrong, and we are sorry. This is the least disruptive option that was proposed. If you can avoid these local streets while they are repairing the crossing, please do so. If you typically park along these streets, please consider moving your car for the duration. Construction is expected to wrapped up by November 6, 2025.
Please help us share this message to get the word out. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work together to keep Springfield moving safely.

Current 2025 dog licenses expire December 31, 2025, so consider this your friendly reminder to get your 2026 registration taken care of before your four-legged best friend decides to go exploring — and you end up meeting our fine Springfield Police Department the hard way.

The Town of Springfield’s Board of Trustees is responsible for appointing two representatives, who must receive electrical service within the boundary limits of Springfield, to serve on behalf of the town.
The Arkansas River Power Authority is a political subdivision of the State of Colorado, supplying wholesale electric power to its municipal members: Holly, La Junta, Lamar, Las Animas, Springfield, and Trinidad.
The appointment for this vacant position will begin January 1, 2026, and expire December 31, 2029. Interested parties should submit a letter of interest to Springfield Town Hall, 748 Main Street, Springfield, CO 81073, or by email to Town Manager Tammy Newman at tnewman@springfieldco.gov.

Due to muddy conditions, the landfill will remain closed today, September 24, 2025.
The Springfield Board of Trustees will hold a Work Session on Monday, September 22, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. at Springfield Town Hall. The agenda is linked here: https://5il.co/3pyk3
*Update: The predicted moisture did not grace us with its falling this morning, so the landfill will open after all. At 10:00 AM the Landfill will open to small, residential vehicles. We will accept large, commercial vehicles at 12:00 PM, giving things a bit longer to dry out to accommodate your size. We are sorry the inconvenience the weather causes your landfill plans. We love the rain but we do not want anyone getting stuck out there, as you would have to arrange your own means of rescue. Furthermore, we are mandated by the State of Colorado to close the landfill when wind speeds reach a certain threshold. We realize that in Baca County; the number of those days seem to add up, but we are simply following rules and regulations to keep the landfill open, weather permitting of course.
The Springfield Landfill will be closed today, September 18, 2025 due to muddy conditions.
*Update: The landfill will open at 12:00 PM as planned, to Residential traffic only. It will remain closed to Commercial traffic as we continue to dry out!
The Town of Springfield Landfill will have a delayed opening of 12:00 PM today, September 17, 2025 as we wait for things to dry out and become a touch less muddy!
